Pura Tirta Gangga, or Tirta Gangga Temple, is located in the Eastern part of Bali, more precisely in Karangasem Regency. The water palace stands on the foot of Mount Agung and is the epitome of natural beauty and historical grandeur.

What Pura Tirta Gangga offer is another side of Bali you won’t find anywhere else. If you fancy a trip there, then take this article as a guide.

Tirta Gangga: The Front Garden of The King

What is the meaning of Tirta Gangga?

Tirta Gangga translates as “holy water of Gangga”. It refers to the holy Ganga River in India, which holds utmost importance to Hindu society. Therefore, the name carries hope to make Tirta Gangga as blessed and useful as the real Ganga River.

The history of Tirta Gangga Temple begins in 1946 under King Anak Agung Alurah Ketut Karangasem Agung’s governance. The architecture-loving King aims to make Tirta Gangga multifunctional. So, he turns it into a ritual site, a place to greet guests, and an entertainment center.

Unfortunately, Tirta Gangga was almost destroyed by the catastrophic Mount Agung eruption in 1963. Luckily the government of Bali was able to immediately fix the issue later in the same year.

What to Expect at Pura Tirta Gangga?

As a ‘temple’, Tirta Gangga may seem different from the other famous temples in Bali.

Tirta Gangga is one of the Pathirtan temples on the island. It’s typically used by people who want to bathe in the holy water and purify themselves. Another example of a Pathirtan temple is the famous Tirta Empul Temple.

There are many activities to do in Tirta Gangga’s area. For starters, simply sightsee and take photos of the garden, which has many carvings, sculptures, and a fish pond to adore.

Go a bit deeper into the area; you can try the clear-and-cool watered swimming pool. Moreover, there’s also a chance to chill and row a boat.

It’s better to use modest yet comfortable apparel since Tirta Gangga is considered holy. Tirta Gangga Temple’s opening hour stretches from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.

“How Do I Get To Tirta Gangga Water Palace?”

The best way to get to Tirta Gangga Water Palace is by car or motorcycle. Actually, you can also get there by bus, then get off at the stop near the palace in Corridor 2B. However, it’s way easier to just rent your own vehicle or use Go-Jek or Grab’s services to avoid going astray.

Then, how long is the drive there? It depends on your starting point.

If you’re going from I Ngurah Rai International Airport, Seminyak, or Ubud to Tirta Gangga, you may need to spare 2 hours for the ride. Meanwhile, if you plan to go from Lempuyang Temple, you’ll only need 20 minutes.

You may notice that Tirta Gangga is quite far from the famous areas of Bali. But fret not, because many people can prove that it’s totally worth the long drive.

Where to Go After That?

Pura Tirta Gangga is a one-hectare space, typically taking 1-4 hours to go around all the areas. Then, where to next? Here are some interesting places to visit near Tirta Gangga;
